Depth Comes First:

Why the Ultra Depth™ Process Begins with Verified Profound Somnambulism

In hypnosis, depth has never been a symbolic or abstract idea.

It is something that develops gradually through suggestion, response, and cooperation.

For a long time, practitioners across different schools have shared a common understanding:

the deepest level reachable through hypnosis itself is what has traditionally been called

profound somnambulism.

This term is not poetic.

It refers to the outer limit of hypnotic suggestibility—the point at which the hypnotic mechanism is fully engaged.

The lineage that includes Dave Elman, followed by Walter Sichort, and later systematized by his student James Ramey,

rests on this same understanding of depth.

Acknowledging this sequence is not a matter of interpretation,

but of historical accuracy.

Elman’s rapid induction routines remain highly respected.

They offer one of the most effective ways to secure a meaningful level of depth within a short period of time.

Many experienced practitioners—including myself—continue to rely on them because they work.

Suggestion, when used skillfully, does deepen hypnosis.

But suggestion also has a definable endpoint.

That endpoint is profound somnambulism.

Reaching it is not something to be assumed.

It must be clearly verified.

Historically, one of the most reliable indicators of this depth has been complete amnesia.

Not partial confusion.

Not delayed recall.

But the unmistakable absence of access to information that would otherwise be immediately available.

This phenomenon has never been about performance or display.

It functions as a practical reference point,

confirming that the hypnotic process has reached its full operational depth.

Only from this position does it make sense to speak about what comes next.

The Ultra Depth™ Process, as named by James Ramey, does not attempt to bypass this stage.

Nor does it reject suggestion.

Instead, it takes verified profound somnambulism as its point of departure.

From this depth onward, the process changes in nature.

The determining factor is no longer increased suggestion,

but the role of the subconscious itself,

supported by conscious cooperation and a genuine attitude of letting go.

This distinction is subtle, but essential.

Without verified depth, it is possible to proceed using suggestion alone.

From intermediate states or shallow somnambulism,

responses may arise that appear externally similar to Esdaile or Sicort conditions.

Reduced responsiveness, altered time perception,

or apparent detachment from the external environment

can look convincing when observed from the outside.

Yet these are only superficially similar reactions,

not the same states.

They rely on suggestion to sustain them

and lack the structural stability that true depth provides.

This is how pseudo-states most often arise—

not through deception,

but through a misunderstanding of depth itself.

When profound somnambulism has been genuinely achieved and verified,

the same phenomena emerge in a very different way.

They are no longer imposed by suggestion,

nor maintained through effort.

They arise as internal configurations made possible

because sufficient depth is already in place.

From this perspective,

Esdaile and Sicort are not “deeper” states.

They are better understood as distinct internal rooms,

accessible only once the foundation is secure.

This is why the Ultra Depth™ Process is described as depth-based rather than suggestion-driven.

It does not deny suggestion.

It respects it fully—up to its natural limit.

What follows is not about pushing further,

but about recognizing when depth has done its work

and allowing a different level of organization to emerge.
