Sichort State vs Esdaile State

Why the difference between these two states is structural, not a matter of degree.

Depth as Sequence, Not a Slider

The Esdaile State and the Sichort State are often spoken of as if one were simply "deeper" than the other — as if depth were a single dial turned further. Within the Ultra Depth™ Process, that is not how these states relate. Each is reached in a definite order, built upon Profound Somnambulism, but the move from one to the next is not more of the same thing. It is a change in what is actually operating.

The Esdaile State: Where the Subconscious Begins to Take Over

In the Esdaile State, motor control is fully released — the subject cannot move even the smallest muscle on command. Two structural markers define it. The first is the catatonic response: a locking of the deep skeletal muscles that the subject's conscious mind is not producing. It resembles ordinary catalepsy from the outside, but catalepsy is the conscious mind stiffening the outer muscles, while the catatonic response is the subconscious engaging the deeper ones — often the most efficient muscles for the task, in a way waking effort cannot reproduce. The second marker is general anesthesia sufficient for surgery, arising automatically, without any suggestion, as a byproduct of the depth itself.

Historically this state was misread as a "coma state," and feared as something a subject might not return from. That fear rested on a misunderstanding of its structure. The Esdaile State is not a dangerous condition; it is a profound release in which the subconscious has begun to take over the body's control — partially, but unmistakably.

The Sichort State: Where the Transition Completes

The Sichort State is not a deeper version of the Esdaile State. It is the completion of the transition the Esdaile State began. Where the Esdaile State shows the subconscious in partial control — the rigidity of the catatonic response — the Sichort State is marked by the opposite: extreme muscle flaccidity, the body going completely limp. That reversal is the visible sign of a deeper change: the ego's controlling function itself becoming inactive.

Here the phenomena shift accordingly. There is extreme time distortion — subjects often believe they simply fell asleep. Time distortion appears in ordinary trance as well, but the degree here is of a different order, structurally unlike what occurs in the somnambulistic range. Physiological recovery is observed at several times the ordinary rate. And a documented indicator of this state is that the subconscious remains protective: it perceives the surroundings and will move the subject, or bring them out, if danger arises. The facilitator has nothing to perform here. That is precisely the point — the conditions are open for the subconscious to do what it does, without interference.

Why the Difference Is Structural

The distinction, then, is not one of degree along a single scale. In the Esdaile State the subconscious begins to override the layers of conscious and unconscious control; in the Sichort State that override reaches its complete form. Two states that both look "very deep" from the outside are, structurally, at different points in a single transition — from a depth where intervention still shapes the work, to one where intervention has ended and the subconscious operates on its own. Reading them as points on a slider misses the change that actually distinguishes them.
