Why Some Trainings Cannot Reach Ultra Depth™
A structural clarification — not an evaluation of anyone's practice.
A Question of Structure, Not of Merit
It is sometimes asked why certain deep-hypnosis trainings do not arrive at the states the Ultra Depth™ Process works with — the Esdaile State, the Sichort State, and what lies beyond. It is worth saying clearly at the outset: this is not a judgment of anyone's skill or sincerity. It is a description of structure. These states have structural conditions, and where those conditions are not in place, the states do not follow — however capable the practitioner. And the most fundamental of these conditions is not the technique itself, but the cooperation of the subconscious that the technique exists to invite.
The Subconscious Cooperates — It Is Not Compelled
Beneath every structural condition lies a more basic one. These states are not produced by the facilitator and imposed on the subject; they open when the subconscious itself cooperates. In this understanding the subconscious is not an object to be controlled but a partner whose consent and intention come first — it opens these depths when it judges the conditions right, and for its own reasons.
This does not make technique unimportant. It makes its purpose exact. Precise, careful work is what forms the conditions in which the subconscious can cooperate: the flexibility of the conscious and unconscious layers, their willingness to yield the foreground, and above all a real, verified depth rather than a suggested resemblance. Technique matters greatly — but its role is to prepare the ground, not to command the result.
This is also where the actual gap lies. What most often prevents these states is not a lack of effort or sincerity. It is that the work is carried out within a suggestion-based, ego-centered frame — the subject seen as someone to be directed, depth assumed rather than established. In that frame the conditions for the subconscious to come forward are never formed, and no refinement of suggestion supplies them. The states are missed not because technique was unimportant, but because the structural understanding that technique must be built on was absent.
The Foundation That Cannot Be Skipped
Within the Ultra Depth™ Process, Profound Somnambulism is not one stage among others. It is the structural foundation on which everything above it rests. In this tradition it is confirmed through an overt test — the establishing of complete amnesia — rather than inferred from a covert one. This can take time, and for some it is difficult to reach at all. But if this foundation is assumed rather than verified, the structural basis of everything that follows is already different. A response that looks similar, produced without this foundation, is not the same state. It only resembles one.
Why Wanting It More Does Not Help
There is a further condition, and it runs against ordinary intuition. The Ultra Depth™ Process is a process of letting go, not of effort. The deeper states open as conscious control releases — which means they cannot be reached by trying harder, or by craving the experience. In practice, a strong desire for the state, in either the subject or the facilitator, tends to work against it: the ego, wanting the result, produces something that resembles it. What is reached that way is a state the ego has generated, not the release the process depends on.
Where Resemblance Replaces Structure
These conditions together explain most of the gap. When Profound Somnambulism has not been fully verified, or when the Esdaile State has not stabilized before the next is attempted, a state of similar appearance can still arise — but the boundary between the ego layer and the subconscious has blurred. Work done in that condition, however careful, is not standing on the actual ground of subconscious override. This is why, in this tradition, each state must be established before the next is approached. The sequence is not a matter of procedure or ceremony; it is the structural condition under which genuine cooperation with the subconscious becomes possible.
What This Is, and Is Not
None of this measures one training against another, or claims that work done in other frames is not valuable. Much of it is precise and effective within its own range. The point is narrower: the specific states of the Ultra Depth™ Process rest on specific structural conditions — a verified foundation, a genuine release rather than a willed performance, each level established in turn, and above all the cooperation of the subconscious that all of this exists to make possible. Where those conditions are met, the states follow. Where they are not, what appears may resemble them without being them.
And none of this is meant to make these states a goal to be chased. Whether or how deep one goes matters far less than what the process of letting go itself opens — and that is where this work is ultimately pointed.
