The Ultra Depth™ Process

​Within the Ultra Depth™ lineage, Profound Somnambulism is recognized as the deepest verifiable depth of hypnosis. It is confirmed most clearly through complete amnesia, and it serves as the foundation upon which the entire Ultra Depth™ Process operates. The Process does not redefine this depth, nor does it claim a deeper level of hypnosis beyond it. It is built instead on a simple recognition: once Profound Somnambulism is authentically established, a different order of experience becomes accessible. Depth here is not an endpoint. It is the ground from which further states may arise.

States Beyond Verified Depth
​
The conditions historically named the Esdaile State, the Sichort State, and the Ramey State (formerly the Zed State) are understood as distinct states that emerge from this verified depth — not as progressively "deeper" hypnosis. As James R. Ramey himself described it, the deepest level of hypnotic depth is somnambulism; from there the movement is, in his word, horizontal, with each state beyond profound somnambulism enabling a more profound effect rather than a greater depth. Existing depth scales could not account for this, because they were built to measure intensity along a single continuum. What appears beyond the Esdaile State is not an extension of that continuum, but a region in which the operational structure itself transitions. Historically these states unfold in a recognizable order, with the Esdaile preceding the Sichort, reflecting the intrinsic organization of the Process itself.

Technique and Structure

The Ultra Depth™ Process is the result of more than half a century of accumulated refinement, originating with Walter Sichort and later systematized by James R. Ramey. Induction structure, the verification and maintenance of depth, and staged progression are its core working elements. Staging anchors each defined depth to a single spoken keyword, so that a person can return to a particular state instantly. These elements exist not to impose experiences, but to establish the conditions under which profound depth can be authentically achieved and sustained.

The Role of the Subconscious
​
At the center of the Process is a particular understanding of the subconscious. Here it is not treated as a passive reaction system, nor as a set of unconscious programs to be overridden. Within the ICS framework, the subconscious is an independent dimension of consciousness that existed before the ego was formed — a foundational layer upon which the ego, the unconscious programs, and the surface identity rest. It is described elsewhere, across various traditions, as the higher self, original nature, the source, or the soul. The working principle that follows is central: the subconscious is not an object of control; it is a partner in cooperation.

In the deeper states this partnership becomes practical. Once the subconscious is no longer hindered by the functioning of the conscious mind, it can attend directly to what is needed; suggestion is required only for the conscious mind and the brain. What the subconscious requires is, in large part, time. In this sense the subconscious governs how experience unfolds — what becomes accessible, and in what measure — while depth establishes the conditions and structure provides stability.

Process, Not Outcome
​
For this reason, Ultra Depth™ is best understood not as a collection of effects or target states, but as a process. Profound depth is the foundation; the distinct states arise as expressions of that depth, guided by the subconscious rather than by effort or external control. This understanding preserves both the technical integrity of the lineage and the primacy of the subconscious in shaping experience.

A Living Lineage Within ICS
 
Within the ICS framework, the Ultra Depth™ Process is neither preserved as a static historical method nor separated from its original lineage. Its foundational principles — verified depth, structural clarity, and respect for the subconscious — are maintained, while the Process continues to be studied, integrated, and articulated within a contemporary context of education, research, and professional practice.
